Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Health

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition recently published a study that revealed a low omega-3 Index is just as powerful a predictor of early death as smoking, shining the spotlight on omega-3 fatty acid supplements and their incredible health-protecting effects. This ground-breaking study is based on data from the famous Framingham Heart Study (FHS) that aimed to improve understanding of the epidemiology of coronary heart disease (CVD) in the USA. The FHS provided unique insights into CVD risk factors and led to the development of the Framingham Risk Score (FRS)- a sex-specific algorithm based on eight common risk factors: age, sex, smoking, hypertension treatment, diabetes status, systolic blood pressure, and total cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol.

The FRS is used to estimate an individual's 10-year cardiovascular risk factor.

The Farmington Heart Disease Study revolutionized the way science and the medical community approach health and disease by demonstrating that modifying certain lifestyle factors such as unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and use of tobacco and alcohol can all impact the risks of CVD. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition paper builds on this. It is ground-breaking in its own right because it dove further into the "unhealthy diet" piece of the Farmington Heart Study by demonstrating that Omega-3 status and longevity are intimately and inextricably linked.

 

What is the Omega-3 Index?

Among the most important modifiable diet-based biomarkers that impact heart health and longevity is fatty acid (FA) status, which, when optimized, reduces CVD risk and all-cause mortality. These risks can be evaluated by calculating an individual’s Omega-3 Index (the quantity of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) in their blood). Omega-3 Index is a percentage (%) of total fatty acids in the blood, specifically the red blood cell membranes, and is a long-term and stable marker of a person’s Omega-3 status.

Indeed, a person's Omega-3 Index gives you a reliable snapshot of their overall health, risk of disease and even longevity, with those having the highest omega-3 Index being 33% less likely to die prematurely than those with the lowest omega-3 Index. Here is what research tells us:

  • An optimal Omega-3 Index is 8% to 12%
  • An intermediate index is in the 4% to 8% range
  • A low index is 4% or below
  • Most Canadians have an Omega-3 Index of about 4.5% or less, which puts them at a significantly higher risk of early death.

Achieving a desirable Omega-3 Index typically requires targeted Omega-3 supplementation and a high-fish diet.
